Get Organized – Save Money and Time at Home and at the Office

Lately it’s been a challenge to dodge all of the media coverage about the economy. While several experts have been giving their opinions about what you can do to save money during these times – I haven’t heard anyone talk about how your efforts at home or at work can help you save time and money. For years, I have always said that two of the biggest benefits of living an organized life or working efficiently are: Saving Time and Saving Money. There are several other benefits as well; such as reducing stress, being proactive, rather than reactive, a free mind to think clearly, children that learn good decision making skills, fostering a sense of accomplishment and enhancing self esteem – just to name a few. There is no time like the present to start today and make small changes that make a big impact.

Here are some strategies to consider implementing at the office

1. Establish consistent naming conventions for files that are saved on your computer, server or in public folders. Ensure that file names are descriptive and have some type of version control. Verify that everyone knows where documents are stored for quick retrieval and to ensure the correct version is being used, so that someone doesn’t waste time using an old version or worse yet, creating a new one because they couldn’t find what they need.

2. Establish company retention policies for documents and then ensure that what is stored in the files or archives match those policies. If you’re short on space, consider off-site records storage or a service that can store your documents electronically.

3. Do you have an efficient process for staying on top of e-mail each day? Your inbox should contain only those items that still require action. Everything else should be filed in a folder, forwarded to someone else for action or deleted.

What will you do to help your family and company you work for save time and money? I’d love to hear what you’ve accomplished. Wishing you success with your projects.
